In this first episode, Alan boards in Edinburgh and receives a tour of the train, getting an insight into the workings of the kitchen. He also takes a stroll across the Silver Sands of Morar, which featured in the movie Local Hero, and hears the story of the construction of the West Highland Line's extension from Fort William to the fishing town of Mallaig.

Alan gets treated to some serious pampering in the onboard spa. At the magnificent Wemyss Bay station he learns how the buildings' unique glass and steel design seamlessly connects passengers from train to ferry. On the train's countryside adventure trip, Alan discovers a treasure island, forages on nature's bounty and takes a wild swim under an incredible waterfall. And in Pitlochry, Alan has an exclusive tour of Scotland's Theatre in the Hills, one of the UK's last repertory theatres.

Alan joins the onboard whisky ambassador, heads off on a soul-stirring visit to Culloden and a seal-spotting boat trip overlooking the Isle of Skye, and embraces deep yoga in the countryside.

Episode 4

Episode 4

On Alan’s final leg, he sets sail to the sacred island of Iona and cruises past Fingal's Cave, before enjoying his last moments on board and bidding farewell to the Royal Scotsman in spectacular style.
