Sitcoms are the most widely syndicated format in television, which makes comedy the easiest TV genre to watch free: entire runs of older favourites sit on Tubi, Pluto and Roku's channel, often on several services at once. Current network comedies are the exception — new episodes typically land next-day on the network's own subscription. Because comedies get rewatched endlessly, the maths favours any service you already hold over paying per episode. And comedy streaming originals almost never leave the service that made them, so for those, the subscription question is the whole answer.
